Data authentication, confidentiality, and integrity are what the Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) can provide. IPsec VPN works through authenticating and encrypting each IP packet (small blocks of data) which are exchanged by your computer and the website, and contains protocols which are used to establish a mutual authentication and the use of cryptographic keys between the two hosts.
IPsec VPN is widely used for VPN services because of its flexibility and its ability to protect data flows. However, it is also as complex as it is secure – both hosts must agree on the same security policies which will be configured on both ends. The sending host can encrypt the packets before transmitting them across the network; the receiving host can authenticate the packets to make sure that there have been no alterations as it was being transmitted; and the receiver can detect and reject replayed packets (data which are maliciously repeated or delayed).
There are two modes in which IPsec VPN operates. The first one is the host-to-host transport mode, where both parties must perform all cryptographic operations to create an end-to-end security. The receiving host creates the encrypted data, which is sent through a single Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) tunnel, then retrieved by the receiving host.
The second one is the tunneling mode, where, aside from the hosts, special gateways also perform cryptographic operations. Contrary to transport mode, the tunneling mode creates multiple tunnels between gateways to create a gateway-to-gateway security. The entire IP packet is encrypted and authenticated, then encapsulated into a new IP packet with a new IP header.
IPsec VPN also has two types of data packet encoding: authentication header (AH) and encapsulating security payload (ESP). AH provides authentication and integrity to the data by applying a one-way hash function to detect any alterations made in the data. This way, the receiver will know if the data is authentic or not. ESP provides confidentiality by encrypting the IP packet layer through symmetric key encryption.

PureVPN. PureVPN offers the IPsec VPN protocol plus the newer, more advanced ones: PPTP, SSTP, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 which also employs the 256-bit military-grade encryption. These security features protects all the user’s data from hackers and snoopers, especially for those who frequently connect to public Wi-Fi hotspots such as those in coffee shops and airports.
As an added layer of protection, they also offer NAT Firewall (it blocks unrequested inbound traffic), DDoS protection (defeats the most complex DDoS attacks), and a fool-proof Internet Kill Switch (prevents traffic in and out of the computer when your connection fails).
Another upside for this IPsec VPN service is that they manage and maintain their own network – this means that all the servers are handled by PureVPN and all your traffic goes through them alone, not through third party companies. You’ll have faster connection speed, and if you should have problems with your server, you can contact them directly.
For those who are new to the IPsec VPN technology, PureVPN has the Automatic Protocol Selection where they choose the best type of protocol that suits your needs.
FrootVPN. FrootVPN supports the IPsec VPN protocol and some of the latest protocols, and you can choose which of these three that you want your connection to run in: OpenVPN, PPTP, or L2TP/IPsec. Plus, all of your traffic is protected with a 2048-bit encryption – more than enough to keep snoopers and hackers from tampering with your sensitive data.
They are based in Sweden, and it has multiple servers located in nineteen different countries all over the world, such as Russia, Japan, and Switzerland. Their IPsec VPN servers operate using either OpenVPN, L2TP/IPsec, or PPTP which masks your IP address so it looks like you are browsing in a different location, or whichever location that you want to appear in.
Their IPsec VPN security features are proven efficient in protecting users’ data from getting intercepted and used fraudulently. They also offer the PGP (Pretty Good Privacy), an encryption software that utilizes cryptographic privacy and authentication when sending or receiving messages. You can rest assured that any sensitive information that you send through email or instant messaging is safe through this encryption.
VPN.ac. This well-loved IPsec VPN provider offers personalized services that suit your real needs when it comes to privacy and security. They use AES 256-bit encryption with Elliptic Curve cryptography, plus 4096-bit RSA authentication, SHA512 HMAC and PFS – algorithms and cryptography to ensure that all your data are safe and secure.
Unlike some IPsec VPN providers where the support staff aren’t actually very helpful, their tech support staff are highly-skilled in solving issues regarding your connection. Their servers are connected to 1000 mbps channels and their bandwidth speed is fast and reliable. Your bandwidth speed remains as fast as your internet service provider’s, since they do not allow bandwidth speed throttling.
Subscribing to VPN.ac will cost you $9 per month for one month, $24 per month for three months, $36 per month for six months, and $58 per month for one year.
SaferVPN. Boasting its fast speed and clean, simple interface, SaferVPN is an Israel-based IPsec VPN service that delivers what it intends to: make sure that you have a secure browsing experience. For them to be able to do this, they use four different protocols, which are the L2TP/IPsec, PPTP, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 (the newest and most advanced protocol). Upon signing up for SaferVPN, they will automatically select a protocol for your device, but they will also let you select whatever protocol you want. They also use the 256-bit encryption so you’re sure that no one will ever snoop with your data.
Another great feature of this IPsec VPN service is that it does not keep logs of your activities nor does it monitor what websites you go to and the data sent over their network. However, they do keep a record of the time when you connect and disconnect, the amount of data used during your session, the IP address assigned to your device, and the IP address of the server that you used.
Lastly, you can choose from 300+ servers in over 40+ countries and switch servers whenever you like. This IPsec VPN service’s browsing speed is also extremely fast, with an average of less than 10 seconds to connect to their servers. Plus, if you have any issues or inquiries regarding your IPsec VPN connection, their customer support is ready to assist you with a 24-hour live chat and email.
